Newsletter - January 2022

In this issue

Happy New Year! In keeping with tradition at this time of year, this update looks back at 2021 and forward to 2022 which we hope will see a further return to normal work and travel.

2021 ended with presentations at two excellent events – ASTM ICAM and the AIChE Annual Meeting – which can now be accessed online for those who missed them. The last quarter also saw the publication of articles on inhaled drug delivery, pharma supply chain management, and caking plus a new application note for the Additive Manufacturing (AM) industry discussing the development and application of AM Suitability factors.

Into 2022, we’re putting the spotlight on battery manufacturers, who are reaping the rewards of advanced powder testing, and on early career researchers who will be the focus of the Particle Technology Forum in the first week of March. To finish, a reminder that the easiest way to keep up with everything we’re doing is to join us on LinkedIn.

Wishing all our readers a safe, healthy, and successful 2022.

We’re delighted to be sponsors and co-organisers of the Early Career Particle Technology Forum 2022 which takes place online from 3rd – 4th March. Incorporating sessions on getting published, thriving during your PhD, entrepreneurship and career opportunities in the field, the event is a great opportunity to present your research and learn from others. Apply before 21st January for the Poster and Young Researcher Award Competitions.

Two recently published peer-reviewed papers have highlighted the potential to use AM Suitability (AMS) factors to identify the best candidate powders for printing. This approach capitalises on the unique ability of the FT4 Powder Rheometer® to measure dynamic, shear, and bulk powder properties.

Analysis of year end data underlined the extent to which battery manufacturers – stand alone and car companies – are now embracing advanced powder testing. Rapid sales growth in combination with multiple sales to individual companies suggest that powder property measurement is now routine for those targeting the highest levels of performance. Better battery technology is essential for the transition to clean energy, so it’s great to see our technology playing its part.

Our recently published articles provide relevant reading for a diverse range of customers:

  • Powder Characterisation: A Critical Tool for the Evolution of Inhaled Drug Delivery’ showcases work carried out at the Research Centre for Pharmaceutical Engineering in Graz to enhance the performance of dry powder inhaler (DPIs) formulations. With no need for propellants, DPIs are inherently appealing as pharma transitions towards Net Zero, but they present an exacting particle engineering challenge.
  • Building Robust Specifications Using Powder Testing’ tackles the wider issue of supply chain management within the pharmaceutical industry. COVID-19 has put supply chains under intense pressure and left many companies looking to improve resilience. This article considers how better powder testing can help.
  • Finally, ‘Developing New Anti-Caking Agents Using Powder Testing to Identify High Performance Candidates’ details a collaborative project between ourselves and Omya, a leading producer of industrial minerals. Anyone facing a caking problem will find this article of interest, not just those developing anti-caking agents, as it provides an excellent illustration of the utility of the FT4 for studying this troublesome phenomenon.

If you missed either the ASTM International Conference on Additive Manufacturing (ASTM ICAM) or the AIChE Annual Meeting in November, then you can catch up with our presentations by following the links. Topics covered include polyamide powder rejuvenation, scroll compaction a novel technique for uniform powder bed compaction, and use of the FT4 to study humidity-induced caking.
